your inner dog and blather

Someone sent me this quiz which I'm sure has been around and around, but I'd never tried it. Gave it a go and seems I am a:

Shetland Sheepdog! Looks like a mini Lassie. Wish I was that cute, lol! Anyway, if anyone's interested in discovering their Inner Dog, here's
the link: http://www.gone2thedogs.com/index.html?/game.html (click the link on the right pane) Lemme know what you get.

Other than that, I'm chipping away at a holiday story for the AK mini-zine and am pleased that others are doing the same.

Discovered that my mild-mannered and extremely gentle cat, Tommy, would rather break every bone in his body than be put into a cat carrier and taken to the vet for his annual exam. Let's just say, he won the wrestling match. No vet visit. Now, what do I do if he ever really *needs* to go, that's the question.

On the even more trivial side, I'm baking cookies tomorrow for a cookie exchange at work. Doing one with apricots, pine nuts, toasted almonds and an amaretto glaze. Never did a cookie exchange before. Looking forward to it.

Here's to keeping warm and making the best of the holidays. I know it's been rough for a lot of you. Hope we all have a much better New Year.

This is what happens when I have to work on a Sunday! I've never attempted crackfic before (lucky for you), but I remembered reading a delightful series of anthropomorphic stories in another fandom and wondered if I could do something similar for XF. I should probably apologize for this in advance, but I won't. I enjoyed it too much. :D After all, it combines two of the things I enjoy most in life. So, with ample warning and in hopes that it provides you with a smile or two, I present:

A dumb sort of question

But I'm sincere when I ask: what does it mean to beta a story? No, I haven't lived in a cave all my life. I have a general understanding of the term as applied to fanfic; well,  I think so anyway, but I'd really like some clarification. The question occurred to me because I saw a post on Ursula's LJ asking for a beta reader for her very fine "Lost" story and it just made me curious about that whole beta concept.

Dumb as it may be, I'd really like to ask any of you writers and beta readers out there, how do you define the term? Do you mean someone who checks grammar and spelling? Do you mean someone who actually story edits and suggests possible changes in dialogue and plot? Someone who tells you whether the characters are actually 'in character or not'? Or someone who cheerleads and says 'ooh, that's great'? Or all of the above?

I've seen stories where writers have commended a beta or betas for their assistance and I sometimes wonder how much help they were given. Some of these stories are excellent, absolutely fabulous. Then again, there are stories that have multiple betas (or so the writer acknowledges) but I wind up wondering if anybody involved could spell, have a clue about grammar or know how to plot a story if their life depended on it. In other words, I am confused.

So, could you please share  your take on what a Beta is all about?

Happy Halloween!

Ooooh, [info]biani, gave me a pressie! A BEE-U-TEE-FULL black cat with lovely green eyes on my User Profile!  Aww, thanks, Bianca! I'd link it here to show it off, if I could figure out how (bangs head firmly upon desk). It's so cute!

Downloaded Nick singing and am trying to sneak a peek before I go home but I don't think I'll get a chance. :(  Can't wait to see it!

And in other news, we had a little 5.6 earthquake here last night. Normally, everyone's pretty laid-back about a tremor or two, but once you get up in the 5.0 and up range, it's a tad more difficult to ignore, especially when it seem to go on and on and on.... I stood under my living room doorway, swaying back and forth and watching my table lamp shaking like a leaf. My cat, Bobby, looked at me for a few seconds and then strolled over to his food bowl for a snack. That's when I KNEW, it wasn't going to get worse! Cats are so cool.

Anyway, have a Happy Halloween Everybody!

Well, tomorrow is Halloween, one of my fave holidays, so I'm perked! I'm also delighted about all the wonderful new Nickage we've been getting lately (thanks [info]biani ), especially NL singing--the man has an x-rated voice, woohoo! Now, if only he could be in XF2!

Anyway, had to try and whip out a little something for the occasion. So, here's a little Halloween fic.

Title: "Three Halloweens That Never Happened to Alex Krycek"
Pairing: gee, let's make a guess :D
Word count: a little over 5,200

Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize!

Or, to paraphrase CNN,  "Al Gore is the big winner in 2007 and this time there's no recount!" YAY!

Well, this makes me feel good, not only because the issue of global warming is critically significant to ALL of us, but because I recall way back in '92, when George Bush *Senior* dismissed Gore's environmental concerns and referred to him (very condescendingly) as "The Ozone Kid."

And now, 15 years later, Bush JR has created his ignominious legacy of incompetence, deceit and arrogance and Gore has definitively proven that he is NOT the loser of the two. SO THERE!

Took the 3:10 to Yuma

Well, okay, I saw the movie. And...

This is the first Western movie I've REALLY liked since "Tombstone." I liked it because it takes a simple premise and carries it out with complex characters. I REALLY liked it because it presents a fascinating relationship unfolding between two very different men. The psychological western is alive and well! I also REALLY liked it because the acting is superb and the direction captures the best aspects of a classic western.

Tearjerker movies and "Ratatouille"

  • Jul. 4th, 2007 at 9:37 AM

I'm going to see "Ratatouille" in a little while, and no, I hardly expect it to be a tearjerker. :D  However, I'm thinking, if I want a good cry, what are some good tearjerker movies on DVD? One caveat, no movies with animals getting hurt/dead, i.e. "Bambi," "White Fang," etc. I don't need to cry THAT much. Just some good old-fashioned schmoopy stuff. I can think of a few old classics immediately, like:

An Affair to Remember
Steel Magnolias
Breakfast at Tiffany's

Gee, chick-flick heaven (not too realistic, mostly romantic, mostly happily ended). LOL!  But, I was hoping for something a bit different, maybe. One I can think of and highly recommend: "The Sum of Us" starring a young Russell Crowe as a gay man living with his father and looking for "Mr. Right." There are scenes in that one that can really start the tears rolling.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Saw "Ratatouille"--very entertaining. Please don't bring any kid under 10--it'll probably bore them as it did the four little kids who sat behind us and chattered and whined and sneezed snot into my hair. I still managed to enjoy the movie! Testament enough.

Well, tomorrow is Nick Lea's birthday. I haven't posted a fic in a while, so what better occasion, right?

LJ cut is behaving erratically; if it doesn't work,  I'll just post a link to the story on my webpage. Anyway, here are the particulars:

Title: Bridges
Pairing: Mulder/Krycek
Word Count:  7,700 or so
Rating: a little adult language, nothing explicit (darn it)
EDIT: Griva created a lovely cover for the story and you can see it on my website-

Saw "Waitress"

BW Cat in Window
Went to the movies today. My friend and I intended to see "Shrek 3" because too many people were flooding into "Pirates". Then we saw the hundreds of noisy kids heading into Shrek. We decided to go to "Waitress" instead (which was selling out, much to my happy surprise).

Just gotta say that it's nice to see a movie about real, adult human beings once in a while. I recommend it. Really good performances, especially by Keri Russell. Interesting characters. Thought the script was going to be formulaic, but it rises above that, IMO. There's humor and pathos and a bittersweet edge. The film was very satisfying, I thought. And, if you like PIE, this is the film for you! Also very glad to see Nathan Fillion; he was as attractive and appealing as ever.

A strange, tragic note about the film: the writer/director, Adrienne Shelly, who also plays a waitress in the film, was murdered by some crazed construction worker after she complained about the noise near her office. Pointless. Bizarre.

Bobby's birthday

  • May. 20th, 2007 at 8:34 AM
My Bobby
Bobby's my cat and tomorrow is his 18th birthday! That's 88 in human years. A year and a half ago, he was diagnosed with kidney failure and the vet gave him about six months. Ha! Bobby's always been a very stubborn and independent cuss, ever since I adopted him from the Humane Society at five months. It was October 1989 and we'd had a rather large earthquake here a few days prior. Loma Prieta it was called. I've always had cats but never a marmalade tabby. The earthquake really shook me up, so to speak, and I realized it's not wise to put things off 'for some other time'. You might not get that time, you know? So, off I went to the SPCA. Oh, there were so many animals, cats and dogs. I wish I could've adopted them all! Bobby was all by himself in his cage, a little fellow. He had siblings but they'd all been adopted. I put my fingers through the bars to pet him and he trotted over and gave me a good swack with his very sharp claws. It was love.

He's got some Krycek in him, that's for sure. He's a survivor, my Bobby. He's always been tough, but meets me at the door ever day when I come home from work, follows me around like a dog, cuddles with me every chance he gets (whether I like it or not), and makes me smile just when I need to. He has to take pills every day now for hypertension and I give him IV fluids every other day (what a learning experience that was!), but he still bats around his ping pong balls once in a while and even manages to chase his nemesis, my other cat, Katrina, all over the house, albeit slowly. His hair is thinner and he gets more mats, he's skinny and his muscle tone is mostly gone, but he's still beautiful to me. I'm giving him his favorite treat, Brunswick sardines in spring water to celebrate. Just take a look at this expression; that's his 'why the hell are you sticking a camera in my face again?!' look. Happy Birthday, Bobby!

Drive

Managed to watch a half hour of "Drive" on Fox tonight. All I can say is, I'm relieved that Nick is not in it. I feel sorry for Nathan Fillion. Hope they're paying him well. What a comedown from "Firefly."

I suppose it could be a hit, but who cares. It's "Amazing Race" with cars on steroids. Inexplicable and not as interesting. 'Course I could only take a half hour of it, and that included the commercials. If anyone has the fortitude to watch it to the end, let me know what you think.

Earthlink sucks, sucks, sucks!

I just gave up after ONE HOUR and ELEVEN MINUTES on hold!. I'm using a free wireless connection because my Earthlink DSL line died. Again! So, I've run every damn test a dozen times. It's their WAN line, not ME! To place a trouble ticket is excruciating. I realize that every Help  Desk for every company in the world is now based in India. They must all be on the phone and that's why I'm on hold FOREVER! It takes me two days to get a trouble ticket going with these cranks, but you can't check on the status because they just put you on hold and then...go away.
And I still have no DSL connection!

Well, this means I'll have to change my damn email address with all the crap that entails, dump my web page, make sure my stories are somewhere and get another ISP. (Deep breath. Deep breath. Deep breath.)

Only Beginnings

Here are two Mulder/Krycek "story starts" that I found as I peered into my moth-ridden WIP folder. I wasn't sure where to go with them, so I let them languish, and languish and languish…

Anyway, since LJ allows me to annoy my flist like this, I'm posting them to see if anyone has any suggestions (aside from deleting them, which is certainly a viable option) that might actually result in some semblance of a *plot*. If so, I sure would be thrilled to hear 'em.

So, here they are:

Taking things seriously is highly overrated

Tom and Jerry
I've always been too serious about fandom (among other things). The older I get, the more I realize how unrealistic that is. For me, seriousness implies a certain permanence, importance, solemnity. Fandom isn't any of those things. Fandom is really pretty funny (and I don't mean that in a deprecating way either). I like this quote. It's true. Now, if only I could do it much more often...
